You are so misguided.
Our founding fathers...Ralph,
You are so misguided.
Our founding fathers did not set us on the present course of gigantic disparity of distribution of wealth, a course which the dominant hard core of the Republicans supports. See the data at this site, particularly at the paragraph, beginning, "Inter Press Service also summarizes an updated report by the US Census Bureau that 1 in 7 people in the US are in poverty."

Your comment totally ignored the reality that Sarah Palin's website had rifle scope crosshair symbols upon the locations of several Congresspeople and the vengeful language that Palin used in mobilizing against Congresspeople such as Giffords. (Have you even forgotten that Giffords is a moderate that took a centrist position on gun control???)

Whence art there any "misrepresentation of facts"> Even Newsmax or Town Hall would be hard-pressed to deny the truths with the crosshairs map and Palin's rhetoric.GeoKarohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11463970361326939857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7557415519430161123.post-63115793883586435512011-03-26T18:53:58.835-04:002011-03-26T18:53:58.835-04:00I wound up at this site by accident. Cer...RE point 7
Get rid of light bulbs for CFLs...

Certainly it's fun to try out new lights whether CFLs or LEDS, as mentioned:

But all lights have their advantages and uses, it's wrong to say "switch all your lights" just to save energy, energy use is only one aspect.

The ordinary simple light bulb has for many people a pleasing appearance, it responds quickly with bright broad spectrum light, is easy to use with dimmers and other equipment, can come in small sizes, and has safely been used for over 100 years.

100 W+ equivalent brightness is a particular issue - difficult and expensive with both fluorescents and LEDS - yet such incandescent bulbs are apparently first in line for banning (as in the EU)!

There are also problems in achieving small size bright bulbs with fluorescents and LEDS, while halogens, related to ordinary bulbs are only slightly more efficient, and will gradually be phased out too given the proposed efficiency limits.

In any case:
Since when does America need to save on electricity?
There is no energy shortage, there are plenty of local energy sources, Middle East oil is not used for electricity generation.
Consumers pay for any power stations, just as they do for factories and shops generally.
Certainly it is good to let people know how they can save energy and money - but why force them to do it?

Emissions?
OK: Does a light bulb give out any gases?
Power stations might not either:
In Washington state practically all electricity is emission-free, while around half of it is in states like New York and California.
Why should emission-free Seattle, New York and Los Angeles households there be denied the use of lighting they obviously want to use?
Low emission households will increase everywhere, since emissions will be reduced anyway through the planned use of coal/gas processing technology or energy substitution.

Also, the savings amounts can be questioned for many reasons:
For a referenced list of reasons against light bulb bans, see
http://www.ceolas.net/#li1ax onwards

----------------------

RE "mecury worse from coal power stations than from CFLs"

Why does this folk tale keep doing the rounds?

Greater coal power mercury problem was only ever true where untreated coal power dominated,
and is not true any longer.
New injection and photochemical techniques along with conventional gasification and wet scrubber use have -and will- dramatically reduce all coal power mercury emissions:
USA Government EPA: 90% reduction by 2018, (phase 1 = 21% reduction by 2010, phase 2 = 69% further reduction by 2018):
"On March 15, 2005, EPA issued the Clean Air Mercury Rule to permanently cap and reduce mercury emissions from coal-fired power plants for the first time ever. This rule makes the United States the first country in the world to regulate mercury emissions from utilities."
Incoming EPA administrator Lisa Jackson has confirmed continuing with reduction plans.

All about mercury and CFLs and emissions, with referenced links including Government EPA:
http://www.ceolas.net/#li19x

In a nutshell:
1. We know where the ever decreasing coal power stations chimneys are and we can treat their emissions with ever increasing efficiency at lower costs.
2. Compare that with billions of scattered broken lights on dump sites, when we do not know where the broken lights are, and so we can't do anything about them.
.Lighthousehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08123172670211101092noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7557415519430161123.post-90955125556594328372009-02-07T21:37:00.000-05:002009-02-07T21:37:00.000-05:00The new stimulus package will not do much of anyth...The new stimulus package will not do much of anything to save our economy.

We need to get to the heart of the matter and nothing good will happened until we do. The first question to ask is this: Who said we had to compete like this with one another in a global economic arena? Has the Free Market killed the Free Enterprise systems?

Actually, Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke did get to the heart of the matter that he told Congress during the last stimulus package debate in Congress, that the best way to stimulate the economy is to buy "domestically produced goods". This points to the heart of the matter. Free Trade has robbed us of many values and in the end we now have tariffs put on work. The stimulus package also represent a reverse tariff.

Free Trade has devoured the value of workers and labor which represented a true tangible asset acting as a money standard. Paper money needs many manipulations to add value to it and the only money standard propping it up is the whole make up of our society. So when workers values are deflated the whole of society's value is radically devalued. The housing crisis was not based on bad loans but was all about the most massive dislocation of jobs in U.S. history. It is really about job losses, unemployment and underemployment.

It is nonsense to build an economy based on making money on money instead of making things because it leaves out a very important part - the value of workers and labor.

Free Trade has created a vast new working poor class and a hidden underclass grew in proportion to it. Hurricane Katrina exposed a vast underclass living in a silent depression which apparently represented our entire country. We ignored it and put it aside. Now it has come back to haunt us.

The vast working poor class is not able to keep up and are finding it difficult to afford even the cheaper imports from abroad. This inturn hits other economies hard because Free Trade was driven by the power of the U.S. consumers. They are no longer are able to support the process.

Yet, President Obama and the Republicans keep silent about the real situation and just keep playing a false monopoly game to nowhere.

Any extra money spent at retail, just like in the last stimulus package, will fan out to the places where the products are made and will not stay in this country to grow our economy. Only local value added economies work where value is added from raw product up through several levels to retail and then recycles back down again.

We need to make the things we use and grow the things we eat ourselves to add value in our geopolitical setting where the value of labor and workers needs to grow in value too.

Adam Smith held labor and workers as something sacred and the core of society. The Free Traders leave this part out when they use Adam Smith to defend their concepts.

Until we are able to buy "domestically produced goods" again, we need to create commerce as best we can at local levels. We should be thinking about mercantile business to business centers in all of our cities and couple it people to people commerce.

Also our tax codes are obsolete and need to stop the Payroll Tax that acts as a flat tax on the working poor. We suggest Taps instead of Taxes on all transactions at a very low rate and do away with all other taxes.
See http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Ray_Tapajna
http://tapsearch.com/tapartnews/
http://tapsearch.com/flatworld/
http://www.bizarrepolitics.com/
http://tapsearch-global.blogspot.com ( and especially note this post - Rush Limbaugh could have saved the world. )Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15555635879115959214noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7557415519430161123.post-24640361959420226712009-01-16T16:27:00.000-05:002009-01-16T16:27:00.000-05:00There is no 'Green' case against rail-trai...There is no 'Green' case against rail-trails, quite the contrary. Rail-trails preserve the transportation corridors that they effectively recycle by keeping them open. Without such preservation, pieces of the right-of-way can be purchased and used for building sites (one example) and likely be lost forever.

And preserving a corridor by way of trail use does not sentence it to death. Railbanking allows for the possible reclamation of the corridor for potential future rail use. Here's a link for more info: http://www.railstotrails.org/resources/documents/resource_docs/RailbankingHistory.pdf Scroll to 'How Railbanking Works.'

However, I do agree with your suggestion that trains & trails can co-exist. Many typical railway right-of-ways are between 60-100' wide, often allowing ample room for more than one mode of transportation.

Cheers!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11851134370041485954noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7557415519430161123.post-45675731958168215642008-12-21T00:58:00.000-05:002008-12-21T00:58:00.000-05:00Emanual is the fox in "The White House"Emanual is the fox in "The White House"Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7557415519430161123.post-81236136346148039462008-12-10T16:42:00.000-05:002008-12-10T16:42:00.000-05:00As careful readers of Obama's appointments will no...As careful readers of Obama's appointments will note, his appointment of centrists serves to disappoint liberals.
Take a look at my latest post, "NY Times: Progressives holding tongues on frustration over Obama's centrist cabinet." The Times has brought to light what liberals have been grumbling for weeks: "where are our progressive voices?"GeoKarohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11463970361326939857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7557415519430161123.post-37040180557387505582008-12-10T16:37:00.000-05:002008-12-10T16:37:00.000-05:00Mark Simon was apparently missing my point. This is seen most clearly in his foreign policy defense positions.
I am not publicizing Brooks' column to endorse his endorsement of Klein's record. Rather, I am posting the column to call attention to clues that Klein appears to be still in the running.

Even though Darling-Hammond is heading the education team, this does not rule out the possibility that Obama will appoint Klein or the equally objectionable Rhee. Again, keep in mind Obama's apparent openness to having competing voices in certain departments in his administration.

Dr. Darling-Hammond would be the best choice to head the Department of Education. Joyce has highlighted the failures of Klein's leadership. As she notes, Klein runs an effective PR machine, misleading the public as to the school system's actual performance.GeoKarohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11463970361326939857noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7557415519430161123.post-89478336523855743532008-12-10T08:38:00.000-05:002008-12-10T08:38:00.000-05:00Your reprinting of Republican David Brooks' Column...Your reprinting of Republican David Brooks' Column was unfortunate. Brooks substituted propaganda and myth for facts and got it exactly wrong (“Who Will He Choose?” Dec. 5 NY Times Opinion column). Linda Darling-Hammond was appointed as head of Obama’s transition team precisely because she represents the real and deep education reform faction in the national education debate. Her track record of analysis of what it takes to improve the quality of teaching and teachers has been the most consistent critical voice over the past 25 years. She is anything but the establishment. On the other side, we have self-described change agents without a real plan for improving teaching and learning. Brooks does a disservice labeling Klein, who ended the successful reforms in New York’s District 2, a reformer. The question is one of deep versus superficial reform. Deep reform demands that school systems nurture skillful teaching, and that standards assess students’ higher order thinking skills, not just multiple choice tests. We can do better than the superficial reforms that have led to very mixed results over the past eight years. Obama should go with the real reformer, Linda Darling-Hammond.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7557415519430161123.post-1857665656378043062008-11-25T00:32:00.000-05:002008-11-25T00:32:00.000-05:00Interesting.
